AGV Motorcycle Helmets

Welcome to this post where I will be reviewing and sharing the most popular specifications of the top 5 full face AGV motorcycle helmets. I will be comparing a few important points, as overall information, but my goal with this post is to inform you of the pros and the cons of the 5 full face helmets, so you can make an informed decision when purchasing.

We often buy a helmet, stimulated by our emotions (I have done it too) and neglect practicality and things like, how often will you be riding, what type of rider are you (weekend warrior, cruiser, motard, adventurer), will you be getting into racing or doing track days?. The type of rider you are, dictates, in a way, the helmet you should consider. The experienced adventure rider will not be riding with a AGV Pista GP RR in the thick desert sand and scorching sun, not because he cannot but it is not practical, just like the track racer will not be racing with a AGV AX9 (although the peak can be removed), but the shape and design is not suited for when you need to be as fast as you can.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you shouldn’t want the same helmet as what Valentino Rossi uses, but do you really need to spend upwards of U$1700 for a limited edition? This is a question I will leave for you to answer?

I want us to look at this review from a practical rider point of view and really wish to share my research in an easy to follow, down-to-earth way.

We will be reviewing the helmets using the 6 criteria below and end with a summary which will help you compare them and help with your decision making;

AGV Pista GP RR

The AGV Pista GP RR is the top of the range helmet in the AGV helmet brand. I feel it is important to say this right at the start and that is, this helmet is designed for racing. It is not designed for long rides and touring. This is a purpose designed helmet with an aggressive fit, built for the race track. You will not get a better helmet, off the shelf, that is more suited for racing. The AGV Pista GP RR is the only helmet the “man on the street” can purchase that comes with the FIM (Federation Internacionale de Motocyclisme) rating. This means that it has ticked all the racing regulated boxes and you can go straight to the race track and race.

It replaces the previous AGV Pista GP R with a few noteworthy upgrades. It is still an all carbon fiber shell. On the outside the main upgrade is to the back spoiler which is a bit larger and does a very good job of deflecting the wind off the helmet, creating the effect that the helmet feels lighter when riding faster than 65m/h. There is no weight change to the new Pista. The face shield is unchanged and still has only 2 settings, open and closed. It comes standard with the PinLock system and tear off strips. The Pista also has one of the smallest face shield mounting mechanisms, which all contributes to keeping the weight low.

The internals of the AGV Pista GP RR has also received some upgrades and can be adjusted to ensure a better fit. It comes standard with fittings which are hydration pack ready. The top liner has the adaptive fit system which can be adjusted to suit your head size and shape. Included with the helmet is 3mm pads which can be inserted to help with the best fit.

AGV Corsa R Helmet

The AGV Corsa R helmet is classified as a premium street and sport helmet, but equally at home on long stretches of your favorite road. It is manufactured from a combination of Carbon fiber, Fiberglass and Aramid, which makes it light and comfortable when wearing. It has the same shape and silhouette as the AGV Pista GP RR and the same distinctive back spoiler.

The face shield is the same design and comes standard with PinLock and tear-off strip ready. It gives excellent visibility and the visor mechanism is very easy and smooth to operate. The front vents are adjustable, although they do have individual settings. There are 3 top vents and 2 chin vents. At the back we have 2 x large exhaust vents which remain open.

You will be glad to know that it is DOT certified and SHARP rated.

An ingenious feature to this helmet, is the head liner which is reversible. This means that it has a side which is made for warmer weather and the other side made for cooler weather. So, you have the choice of which side you want to use.

AGV K6 Helmet

The AGV K6 helmet is the go-to helmet for all styles of riding. It is the lightest helmet in its class, at a mere 1,250g. It is very comfortable, stylish and functional. The outer shell is constructed from carbon-aramid fibers which help in ensuring a top quality helmet that is DOT and ECE rated. If you are looking for a “street-do-everything” helmet, then the AGV K6 helmet is the one. Do have a look at the exclusive color, “Nardo Gray”, and tell me what you think!

On the outside you will find the same back spoiler as on the AGV Corsa R and Pista but it is integrated into the shell and not as aggressive but still very effective. You still get the 1 chin vent and the 3 top vents but they are small in comparison to the top 2 helmets and as a result, the venting throughout the helmet is sub-standard. The face shield removal mechanism is of the smallest in the business and easy to operate, so you will have no problem fitting any of the aftermarket face shields. The shield comes standard with PinLock anti-fog system and has many positions it can be opened to. The face shield is locked into the closed position as a safety feature. I do need to point out, that should you wear prescription glasses and the shield is in the closed position, your glasses may fog-up. There are 2 exhaust vents, but again, small in comparison. Each of the front vents have their own control levers which in my opinion, makes the operation, while riding, very awkward.

Now, lets look on the inside. Very noticeable is the size of the “neck role” insert. This makes putting the helmet on quite difficult, but once on, it sits extremely comfortable. The whole inner liner can be removed, as would be expected. The cheek pads contour the face wonderfully and there are speaker cut-outs for fitting motorcycle helmet communication systems. The chin curtain effectively helps with the noise level of this helmet, but can also quite easily be removed.

  • Key Features
    • DOT and ECE approved
    • Carbon fiber – Aramid shell construction
    • Integrated back spoiler
    • Very light at 1,250g
    • Has speaker cut-outs

    • Very good quality and well designed
    • Very comfortable
    • Can fit Motorcycle helmet communication systems
    • Lightest helmet in its class
    • Very good noise levels
  • Cons
    • Venting not good and the front vents are too small and have separate adjusters which can be cumbersome
    • Perscription glasses can fog-up when shield is in the closed position
    • Can be difficult to slide on
  • Price estimate
    • U$480 to U$560

AGV K3 SV Helmet

The AGV K3 SV (sun visor) helmet, is the latest upgrade to the previous AGV K3. It is an entry level motorcycle helmet and gives you very good value for your money. The integrated sun visor is the main upgrade to the K3 SV. The AGV K3 SV helmet shell is made of polycarbonate and as a result not the lightest, and weighs in at around 1,550g. The K3 SV is a sport touring style helmet and is DOT and SHARP rated.

The helmet has a chin vent and 2 front facing top vents with a top scoop vent in the middle. The 2 rear exhaust vents do a very good job of extracting warm air inside the helmet and contributes to the excellent venting system. The face shield gives excellent all round visibility and comes with the PinLock anti-fog system. The face shield removal mechanism works brilliantly and easily. Removal and fitting of aftermarket face shields is real easy to do.

On the inside, the neck role and chin pads forms one piece and is removable. There are speaker cut-outs for fitting aftermarket motorcycle helmet communication systems. The distinctive integrated sun visor works very well, so no need for you to take extra sunglasses for the ride.

AGV K1 Helmet

The AGV K1 helmet can be classified as a budget friendly helmet. It has an aggressive silhouette and is an all round, no-frills lid. You get a quality and very functional helmet for the price. It is not the lightest helmet and comes in at just on 1,700g. It is DOT and ECE certified. The AGV K1 helmet has the improved fit and has an intermediate oval shape. Noise levels are acceptable, as well as the overall ventilation.

It has 2 chin vents and 3 top vents, all able to open and close. At the back it has the integrated spoiler which gives it that aggressive racing profile and 2 large exhaust vents for extracting the warm air. The face shield is large and gives enough all round visibility. It has the “city position” which is the ability to just crack the visor open enough to let air in, helping with anti fogging. The shield does come with the PinLock ready system.

On the inside you get the neck role and cheek pads integrated as one and is removable. There are speaker cut-outs for fitting motorcycle helmet communication systems. Fastening of the helmet is done with the very reliable double-D ring system.
